My name’s Rachel and I’m a writer, animal lover, and food-obsessed vegan.
Since I can remember, every family gathering or occasion was celebrated with food. And not just any food – diverse and delicious dishes inspired by my mother’s upbringing in Singapore. Dinnertime at my house meant taking a culinary journey around the world, sampling everything from Indian curries to Malaysian delights like Penang Laksa. To say I grew up obsessed with food would be an understatement. But it was something else entirely that spawned my love affair with cooking…
Growing up in a family of meat eaters, I never thought twice about what was on my plate. You could say I was never a “conscious eater” and neglected to see what dairy and meat could do to my health. This all changed when I met Harrison:
This adorable and sweet natured boy changed my life for the better. It dawned on me not long after he joined our family that if my love for him knew no bounds, then why did that compassion not extend to other animals? After all, they are no different from one another, and have the capacity to feel, think, and love.
I promptly went vegetarian, and 11 years later, proudly made the decision to go vegan. It was these very choices that drove me into the kitchen, determined to create meals that would both nourish my body and please my taste buds. Cooking became my solace and my passion.
While my family chose to remain omnivores, I was grateful to have my mum as a cooking teacher. She made everything from scratch and never cut corners—no pasta sauce from a jar thank you very much! During my early years in the kitchen, the most encouraging lesson she passed on to me is that EVERYONE can cook; they just have to practice, practice, practice!
My Two-Fold Philosophy
Everyone can cook
I truly believe that everyone can cook if they make the effort. All too often I hear excuses like “it’s too expensive and time-consuming” or “I don’t know how.” I want to change these attitudes. I want to help.
Cooking is fun, rewarding, and good for you. If you take the time to learn, you’ll gain so much in return.
Vegan food is the future
It just is.
I don’t just say this as someone who wants to see an end to animal cruelty. I also say this as someone who wants to see all humans, and our planet, heal and thrive.
Vegan food is nutritious, delicious and, most importantly, for EVERYONE.
I started The Hungry Piggy to share the joys of veganism and to get people excited about cooking again.
I aim to:
- Create and share delicious vegan recipes that cater to a wide spectrum of tastes and budgets.
- Support quality vegan businesses (at home and on my travels) and highlight great vegan and cruelty free products.
- Get people excited about being in the kitchen.
